Barbara Blaufuss: March 1, 1951 - June 17, 2011

Barbara Blaufuss, EFM vendor who sold honey and occasional crafts at the market, passed away at the home of her sister in Lawrence after a long struggle with cancer.

Barbara worked for Southwestern Bell for more than 30 years and more recently for Westar Energy. She grew up in Olpe and received her Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees from Emporia State University.

Barbara was well known for her work as a volunteer with Camp Alexander, the Kiwanis Club, and the League of Women Voters.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Camp Alexander or to the Oncology Center at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.

From the Emporia Gazette

Members of the Fiber Floozies knitting club met Saturday morning at the Farmers Market to provide a breakfast of burritos and biscuits and gravy to those who attended and to do a little knitting in the process. Members of the club also knit bunnies for the Read To Your Bunny program, that donates a bunny package to Newman Regional Health newborns to encourage reading. The club meets every Tuesday and can be contacted on their facebook page called Tuesday Night Knitters (Fiber Floozies).

Mamma Mia — Nonna Lucia

There’s a new vendor at the Emporia Farmers Market, with a new product. Nonna Lucia Pasta debuted two weeks ago and was an immediate success.
Andrea Garritano Freeze, soprano, voice teacher and adjunct at the Emporia State University music department, was looking for an extra source of income this summer. The market presented a great opportunity.
Combining her excellent culinary skills with a free summer schedule, Andrea created a local source for something Emporia doesn’t have much access to: fresh pasta.

Dine with Dirty Kanza Bicyclists this Friday

Friends of the Emporia Farmers Market will be cooking up a great batch of spaghetti to feed riders of the Dirty Kanza 200 on Friday, June 3, the evening before the big adventure in the Flint Hills. Pasta will be served from 5:30-8:30 at St. Andrews Church, 828 Commercial, Emporia. Community members are invited to come dine with, meet and greet the riders. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door; $9 adult meal; $5 for children age 10 and under.

The meal will include the market’s homemade pasta sauce, salad, and garlic bread generously donated by Emporia Subways. Desserts by farmers market vendors will be available for an additional dollar.

All proceeds from this Pasta Palooza fundraiser event benefit the operations of the Emporia Farmers Market.
