Farmers markets getting money to take food stamps

"Locally, the Emporia Farmers Market has matched more than $3,000 since beginning the program in 2009, but not with federal funds. A gift from the Emil Babinger Charitable Trust has allowed the market to provide $2 for spending on fresh produce and food items at the market for every $1 debited from a state of Kansas Vision card. Use of the SNAP benefits program at the Emporia Farmers Market has gone for 3 to 4 users in the beginning (per market) to a steady 5 to 9 users, according to market director Tracy Simmons. “SNAP participation at farmers’ markets helps provide fresh fruit and vegetables to families and expands the customer base for local farmers — a win-win for agriculture and local communities,” she said in an interview in 2011."

Food Preservation Workshop ~ July 11, 2012

Mark your calendar now! We are having a food preservation workshop on July 11, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come and learn the proper food preservation techniques for pressure and waterbath canning, and drying. This class will be taught by Karen Blakeslee Rapid Response Coordinator and Food Scientist from K-State. This class has a fee of $25.00. Reservations are required, minimum of 10 and maximum of 20 people, RSVP and fees are due by July 6. Class will be held at the West Campus of Presbyterian Church 1702 W. 15th Ave. Lunch will be provided. Remember to call the Extension Office at 341-3220 for reservations by July 6.

"Patty Kahn brought a refreshing and pretty dish she named Ambrosia Prairie Berry. This yogurt-based mix of berries, granola, nuts, coconut, chocolate and more was the winner of the day. Served on a pizzelle (a traditional Italian waffle cookies made from flour, eggs, sugar, butter and a flavoring such as vanilla, anise, or lemon zest), I have to stand corrected on something! I thought it was pronounced “pits-EL” but it’s Italian, so the pronunciation is “pits-EL-ay.” Aldi’s usually has them. Learned something new!"

Burritos at the Market on Saturday, June 9

The ESU Young Democrats are holding a breakfast burrito fundraiser at the Emporia Farmers Market.

ESU Young Democrats is recognized student organization at Emporia State University. The purpose of ESU Young Democrats is to support and encourage political activism at the University as well as within the community. All political parties and/or affiliations are welcome.

We are currently fundraising in order to hold voter education/ "Get out and Vote" events in the Fall semester, as well as attend our Regional Kansas Democrat event in October.

Burritos will be priced: $3.50 each, No meat: $3.00

It's cook-off season

Sure, there are barbecue competitions every weekend now, and catfish tournaments, and chili cook-offs, but there’s not much that is more fun than a Murphy’s Menu Cook-off at the Emporia Farmers Market.
Now in our eighth season, the cook-offs are a fun, free way to have a stress-free friendly competition, support the market with something different to do while shopping and generally strut our culinary stuff.
Here’s how it works. Thanks to the sponsorship of the market (Thank you, Tracy) and CountryMart North (Thank you, Nancy), area cooks have a place to compete and a chance for a neat prize: a grocery bag full of nifty cooking items and regional bragging rights.
The contests are held either on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. or Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. Those who wish to participate bring their entry to the kiosk in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street in the 15 minute period before the market opens with a copy of the recipe. We’ll take a photo, talk to you about your dish and assign it an anonymous number.
At the opening bell, market shoppers will taste all the entries and vote for their favorite one. The votes will be tallied at an hour into the shopping period and a winner announced! Many competitors will then be the food page star in the following Wednesday’s Gazette.

June 16: Berries
A single recipe of your favorite berry dish. It might be a baked good, a jelly, a compote, a salad. It could be one berry or a mixture of berries and even include what’s available at the market (hint, hint!). We’ll parcel it into tastes and serve. Consider the heat, and if you want your dish back, you’ll need to stay for the vote tally.
July 11: Pinwheel roll-ups
The Homegrown Celebration Pre-party will be on a Wednesday, so a big plate of your best pinwheel filling spread across the tortilla of choice is the competition. Please slice them into little bites and secure with a toothpick to keep them looking pretty. The options are endless.
August 1: Salsa Competition — Hot and Not
We are keeping our fingers crossed on the weather, that the tomatoes last until Aug. 1 so everyone can use home-grown heirloom tomatoes to make their salsas. Of course, green tomatoes, mangos, peaches and beans are all nice salsa bases, too. Fresh or canned, we split these into a mild category and a “pepperhead hot” category. One entry per person per category and we’ll bring the chips.
October 31: Halloween Treats
As luck would have it, Halloween corresponds with the final Wednesday market of the season. Kids big and small are encouraged to come to the market in costume and trick-or-treat with the vendors. Bring a batch of your best treat — Rice Krispie style, popcorn balls, gooey bars and more — to share with the shoppers and you may get a big treat from CountryMart North.
