Triple Your Green in Food Stamp Dollars at the Indoor Winter Market in March

Did you know that the Emporia Farmers Market accepts food stamps? Did you know that, not only can you shop at the Emporia Farmers Market with food stamps, you can double your grocery dollar? The market has plans to continue the 2-for-1 program for low-income shoppers in 2016, and to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the coming summer season, the next two markets—Saturday, March 5 and Saturday, March 19—will feature 3-for-1 shopping.

The Emporia Farmers Market not only accepts food stamps, we double your shopping dollar! Please see the market manager or a volunteer during market's open hours for information on how to shop with food stamps at the farmers market.

Shoppers will be asked to swipe their benefits card for tokens that can be spent on eligible food items with any market vendor. For every food stamp dollar debited the shopper will receive three dollars in the form of market tokens and market bucks. Shoppers with food assistance benefits should see the market manager when they arrive for more details about the program.

Since 2009, the market has distributed $10,801 to low income shoppers via matching programs. With funds from the Emil Babinger Charitable Trust and the Emporia Community Foundation, the market expects to continue to the matching program throughout 2016. As well, via Babinger in 2015, the market provided $1,275 in additional assistance to low-income seniors. Programs encouraging area families with children to shop at the market are also fully funded and in place for 2016.

If you would like market manager, Tracy Simmons, to speak to your business or community support organization about the benefits of shopping at the Emporia Farmers Market, she is currently scheduling for the months of March and April. Topics include supporting low-income shoppers, including seniors, at the market through dollar-for-dollar matching programs to help put healthier foods on the table, and encouraging youth (families with young children) to make the market a part of their weekly shopping habits. The market is looking for partners in the community to help get the word about these programs to the people who will benefit.

The next Indoor Winter Market takes place on Saturday, March 5, and is open from 10am till noon at 701 Commercial in downtown Emporia. The market will hold its final Indoor Winter Markets of the season on March 19, April 2, and April 16. Saturday markets return to the parking lot at 7th and Merchant in May.

More information about the market can be found at www.emporiafarmersmarket.org.
